If you prefer to log into your personal account, please sign in below. EPA provides a variety of tools, detailed below, to understand and access the Power Sector Emissions Data. For further discussion of GWPs and an estimate of greenhouse gas emissions using updated GWPs, see Annex 6 of the U.S. The GWP values appearing in the Overview of Greenhouse Gases and Sources of Greenhouse Gas web pages reflect the values used in the U.S. Greenhouse gas emissions are often measured in carbon dioxide (CO2) equivalent.
In 2025 the world generated 31,920 TWh of electricity, up 3.4% on 2024. Hence, over the forecast period, India’s emission intensity is set to fall below that of Southeast Asia, with the latter becoming the highest emission intensity region. In the European Union, emissions are projected to drop substantially, by an average 11% per year over the forecast period. This improvement reflects the rapid growth in renewable energy and nuclear electricity production relative to rising demand.
The latest monthly data on wind and solar capacity, including total installed capacity, month-on-month and year-to-date additions across 25 countries and economies, covering around 93% of global solar capacity and 92% of global wind capacity. We forecast CO2 intensity to fall even faster over our forecast period, at an annual average rate of 3.7%, down from 435 g CO2/kWh in 2025 to 360 g CO2/kWh in 2030. India saw a decline of 3.3% y-o-y as coal-fired generation contracted amid moderate demand growth and strong renewables expansion. By 2027, emissions intensity is forecast to fall significantly in major regions, with reductions in the European Union, China, the United States, and India all contributing to the global trend. Nevertheless, the trend of clean energy sources limiting fossil-fuelled generation is anticipated to remain robust. The data covers 215 countries, and contains the latest 2025 yearly data for 91 countries accounting for 93% of electricity demand.
Grams of CO2 emitted per kilowatt hour of electricity generated. However, Southeast Asia sees a muted average decline of 0.7% over the forecast period, from 640 g CO2/kWh to 615 g CO2/kWh. The European Union is forecast to post the sharpest fall in emissions intensity from electricity generation, with an annual reduction of around 13%, dropping from 170 g CO₂/kWh to 90 g CO₂/kWh over the period. An increasing share of renewables and robust output in nuclear energy generation are driving this trend.
